Write the token without a suffix. --root-c--default-400 resolves to the
light or the dark value on its own. The suffixed pair below -
--root-c--default-400--light and --root-c--default-400--dark - is what this
page paints, one column each, because a page showing both schemes cannot ask the token to choose.
Families.
Default is the brand blue and carries actions and selection, Alternate the second brand purple; Info,
Success, Warning and Danger are the four states, in that order of severity; Neutral carries text,
borders and every grey surface.
Steps.
Nine per family, 100 to 900. In the light scheme the step is the lightness -
96% down to 4%, with 400 the family's hue at full strength. The dark values are re-tuned
per family rather than derived, so a step keeps its role and not its lightness. Neutral is the exception
both ways: 84% down to 8%, and tinted rather than grey, which is drift from Figma and is tracked in
tokens.manifest.json.
Poles and surfaces. --root-c--light and --root-c--dark are
the two absolute grounds and do not mirror. --root-c--background-color and
--root-c--color do - that is the pair to reach for on a surface, not a ramp step.
Contrast is not automatic.
A step is a color, not a pairing: keep roughly four steps between a foreground and the ground under it,
and check the result.
